Back to the Basics

This coming weekend I'll be playing at a two day RTT at the grand opening of my best friend's gaming store in Raleigh, NC. I have been preaching about the many virtues of the Stormraven... last weekend I ran an 1850 point pure jump infantry DoA list at Genghis Con in Denver and ended up on table 2 the final round... Suddenly I am really starting to like pure jump infantry... Hee!

I feel like now people are finally just starting to see the power of the Stornraven. I guess it's just one of those things... Heh. I have some time to think about whether or not to run a Stormraven this weekend so no hurry to decide which is best. One thing I can say for sure is that my original 2k list with the Stormraven and dreadnaught is a lot better at dealing with Thunderwolves and dark eldar. I don't know what is the local meta in NC and that is kind of interesting. I think you can design a better list if you simply follow the strengths of the codex. The beauty of a pure jump list for me is the powerful combination of the Sanguinor and Dante... They are definitely a pair of aces as far as I'm concerned.

Genghis Con 5th Round Batrep vs. Tyranids

So the final round was versus Tyranids. The primary win condition was to have the most killpoints within 6" of the table center. This looked like a no win situation for me as my opponent could simply march his whole army up towards the center of the table. Deployment was Pitched Battle.

Here is my opponent's army as best as I can remember:

Hive Tyrant
3x Tyrant Guard
Prime - dual bone swords

3x Zoanthrope
3x Hive Guard

10x termagant
10x termagant
10x termagant

Something Wicked Comes Along...

Lelith is a Tarheel !!

DoA at Large Events... Is it truly a competitive army ?

I posted an article yesterday over on BoLS about my current favorite project - DoA. You never know what to expect... some people seemed to like it for sure. Anyways there was the following comment I found very amusing:

"I meant more on how to prepare yourself for when you face something that ignores what DOA has going for it ... i.e. Daemons armies that ignore your meltas and power weapons, and ignore your FNP and armor saves.

"DOA is a "rock" army ... true DOA lists can't handle every top tier tournament list out there, and it's good for people to know that going in. Course, they're fluffy, fun, competitive, and awesome to play ... especially at the local and smaller GT level, so don't overread the commentary as being negative!"

I am wondering what are others reaction to this comment? I think its definitely possible DoA could win any competitive event. Just as any solid army it all comes down to luck, missions, matchups and terrain. The quoted comments came across to me as the classic rock-paper-scissors strawman people use to tear down other armies when they dont have any real in-depth analysis to offer.

Genghis Con 4th Round Batrep vs. Mech Eldar

My fourth game in the GT was versus mech eldar and the mission was Seize Ground with six objectives, each objective had to be at least 12" away from any other marker so basically you end up with two rows of fairly evenly spaced markers. Deployment was Dawn of War.

I've always had a psychological disconnect versus mechdar because the army is very fast and can counter the speed of a DoA army. This was a tough mission for me but I had a couple of advantages:

1) I won the roll for deployment and opted to go second.
2) My only unit to arrive on the bottom of the 2nd turn was the VV which greatly reduced the amount of shooting from the eldar army.

I viewed the game more like a chess match using my movement phases to keep spread out across the table and then made my big move on the bottom of the 6th turn to take and contest objectives. It all came down to the VV... they had to wreck a Wave Serpent full of Dire Avengers to deny the eldar that objective so I would hold one more than my opponent. I was hitting on sixes and one hit got through with the sergeant's thunderhammer - I wrecked the Wave Serpent and just managed to win the game by that one objective... So I would be playing the final match versus Tyranids on the second table. I'll go into a lot more detail regarding the final. Like I said the fourth game was mostly movement so I don't see much of a point in breaking it down turn by turn.

Genghis Con 3rd round batrep vs. Space Wolves

Here is the third batrep versus Space Wolves. You know you're gonna have to face them sooner or later. The primary mission goal was Victory Points and deployment was Pitched Battle. If you destroyed your opponent's highest point unit they counted as double their victory points! My opponent is a friend I see a lot when playing on the road so I knew we would have some fun for sure. This was the first game of the second day. Here is his army list to the best of my recollection:

Rune Priest #1: Living Lightning & JAWS
Rune Priest #2: Murderous Hurricane & JAWS

Jump infantry is immune to Jaws of the World Wolf so that kind of neutered his two HQ. I used to Dante's curse to nerf the Rune Priest with Murderous Hurricane hoping he would eventually Peril and die from an exploded head (think the movieScanners).

10x Wolfguard terminators: 8x( power sword & stormbolter) & 2x (cyclone missile launcher & power fist) <- most expensive unit 5x Grey Hunter: meltagun & plasma pistol - razorback: twin linked heavy bolter turret (Rune Priest #1 attached) 5x Grey Hunter: plasmagun & plasma pistol - razorback: twin linked heavy bolter turret 8x Grey Hunter: plasmagun & power sword - drop pod 6x Long Fang: 4x missile launcher & lascannon 6x Long Fang: 4x missile launcher & lascannon 5x Long Fang: 3x missile launcher & lascannon - razorback: twin linked heavy bolter turret (Rune Priest #2 attached)

Anniversary Day

She came without a farthing
A babe without a name
So much ado 'bout nothing
Is what she'd try to say
So much ado my lover
So many games we played
Through ev'ry fleeted summer
Through ev'ry precious day

All dead all dead
All the dreams we had
And I wonder why I still live on
All dead all dead
And alone I'm spared
My sweeter half instead
All dead and gone all dead

All dead all dead
At the rainbow's end
And still I hear her own sweet song
All dead all dead
Take me back again
You know my little friend's
All dead and gone

Her ways are always with me
I wander all the while
But please you must forgive me
I am old but still a child

All dead all dead
But I should not grieve
In time it comes to ev'ryone
All dead all dead
But in hope I breathe
Of course I don't believe
You're dead and gone
All dead and gone

Genghis Con batreps - 2nd Match versus Necrons

The second mission I was paired off against a Necron army. My opponent had some really hot dice in the first two turns and I was feeling nervous. The Mission objective was Capture and Control with Pitched Battle for deployment. My opponent won the roll for deployment and chose to go second. I remembered some advice from DV8 over on the Bolter and Chainsword Blood Angels forum and followed it. I placed my objective in a table corner as far away as possible from where I thought he'd deploy his army and held everything in reserve. My plan was to flank him on two sides and sweep in taking his objective placed in the middle of his DZ.

Recent Black Hole Sighting

When there is a single thought that just keeps going round, that draws all others in to it, then this rumination's bound to form a singularity.

Others gravitate to the weight of this single thought unable to escape despite knowing that they ought to flee the singularity.

In spectacular collision two spiralling thoughts may create a rare and fleeting fancy that might just avoid a fate within the singularity.

It ascends. It aspires. It struggles against the pull. To which it eventually succumbs. The all powerful and consuming singularity.

Leaving just a single thought going round and round bending all lighter thoughts to itself in a way that's bound to perpetuate the singularity.

Genghis Con batreps - Blood Saints DoA

Here is my first batrep. I apologize that I don't take pictures when I play now. All opponent's army lists are to the best of my recollection.

This was my best performance in a GT. Lady Luck smiled upon me when I needed the rolls. All five of my opponents were fantastic - no rules disputes and five very fun games. I don't think you could ask for more.

So onward HO !!!

Ghenghis Con Aftermath & Tactical Analysis of my DoA army

Well it was a great weekend and my best performance so far at a GT. Most all of the armies there were painted and lots of nice looking ones to boot. I enjoyed every game and never once had to call over a TO. All my opponents were awesome.

Day One results from Genghis Con

I managed to win my first two games. The first game was versus Tyranids with a NidStar (Swarmlord, Tyrant Guard and a Prime) - mission primary goal was Annilihation - I focused my assaults on the termagants spawned by a pair of Tervigons and played keep away from the NidStar... The NidStar was closing in as some of my assaults bogged down versus Hive Guard and a Tervigon but time was called just before they could reach my battle line.

The second game was versus Necrons - mission primary goal was Capture and Control... I set my objective way back in a corner and focused all my units on assaulting the Necrons, taking their objective and forcing a fifth turn phase out.

Genghis Con

Hi everyone. I'll be flying over to Denver tomorrow afternoon to play in the 40k GT at Genghis Con. There are two games on Friday night and then three more on Saturday. I'll be bringing my Descent of Angels army (1850 points). This is my second major event playing the new Blood Angels, the first time was at BoLScon last year. 1850 points made me stop and pause as I'm used to playing 2000 points down here in Florida. I thought about it quite a bit then decided to remove the Stormraven and Furioso from my 2k list. This freed up quite a few points and I have had several local events to test out the new all jump infantry list. I know players like to keep their lists a secret in general but I've always been fairly open about what I play. The new list has Dante with a squad of Sanguinary Guard as his bodyguard plus two full squads of assault Marines as the core. I also have the Sanguinor as my second HQ and and a squad of Vanguard veterans. These are units I have a lot of experience playing so I'm feeling quite comfortable. I've played against enough Wolfstars and mech IG lists so I feel ready for the GT. I've looked at all the missions and to be honest they all look really good for a DoA army. There are lots of great gamers in CO so I know I'll have some tough battles ahead over the weekend and it probably won't be all Space Wolves and Imperial Guard. My one loss at BoLScon came against a brilliant mech eldar list, so believe me when I say know there are plenty of other tough armies out there.

At first I felt naked playing without my cherished Stormraven. My 2k list is totally tweaked now and I know every trick in the proverbial book. It was an adjustment to start playing without it. The Stormraven brings a lot to a jump list but I'm ready now and won't miss it. I'm using Genghis Con to seriously test the new list in preparation. Don't get me wrong - I'm certainly not looking past the mile high city in anticipation for the Windy City. I think it's going to be a lot of fun.

Not much else to say at this point other than I'll try to post my results here on the blog. There are quite a few of my club mates from the 40k Wrecking Crew who'll be there so I'll definitely be in good company.

Is Commander Dante a lame duck ?

From the Bolter and Chainsword Blood Angels forum someone posed the question is Commander Dante a lame duck as HQ. I would love to hear others' opinions. For the purpose of comparison versus Astorath here are two lists:

Dante + Sanguinary Guard + Sanguinary Priest
2x assault squad
Sanguinary Priest
Vanguard Vets

Astorath + Honor Guard (very choppy)
2x assault squad
Sanguinary Priest
Vanguard Vets

Last batrep vs. Mech IG

Here is the third and final batrep. The game was versus mech IG. Please forgive me for not remembering every detail about the IG army - I'll try to be as concise as possible...

Command squad: astropath, 3x plasma - Chimera: multi laser & heavy flamer
Command squad: 3x plasma - Chimera: multi laser & heavy flamer

Leman Russ Demolisher x2 (squadron)

PSB - Chimera: multi laser & heavy flamer
PSB - Chimera: multi laser & heavy flamer

Veteran squad: 3x meltagun - Chimera: multi laser & heavy flamer
Veteran squad: 3x meltagun - Chimera: multi laser & heavy flamer
Veteran squad: 2x flamer - Chimera: multi laser & heavy flamer
Veteran squad: 2x flamer - Chimera: multi laser & heavy flamer
Platoon: HWS, Commissar/power sword

The mission was objectives with a total of six (each numbered 1 through 6); on the start of the third turn you rolled 1d6 - then remove the objective with that number. The objectives were placed all equidistance from each other, both in a line about 12" apart on each side. I won the roll and opted to go second. Deployment was Pitched Battle again and I held my entire army in reserve. One of the assault squad sergeants received the Blessing. The Chaplain and second Priest joined that unit (here after referred to as the super squad).

Blacken the Cursed Sun

Seize the darkened day,
There's only hell to pay,
And no one left to see this prodigal return.

Sweet apathy's black troll.

You'll mourn the *TRADED* soul.
I'll dig a deeper hole.
Sanctity, a breath away.

Just a breath away.

Blacken the cursed sun.
You're not the only one,
To have sunk so far and low.

There is no tomorrow.
A tragedy on display,
A sickness for all to see.

I will kill this part of myself that I hate and that I see in you.
It was always mine, anyway.
There's something you can't take away.

I choose not to feel a thing.
Sanctity, a breath away.
Just a breath away.

Just a breath away.

Blacken the cursed sun.
You're not the only one,
To have sunk so far and low.

There is no tomorrow.

Blacken the cursed sun.
Blacken, what's yet to be done.
Blacken, because now you know,
There is no tomorrow.

Is there still hope for us?
Can we still be saved?

Does your God hold a place for us?
Is there time to repent?
Will we rise from the dead?
Can these sins even be forgiven?
Is there still hope for us?
Were we ever even alive?
Is any of this even real?

You're just a breath away.

You're just a breath away.

Better to die quick,
Fighting on your feet.
Than to live forever,
Begging on your knees.

Can we still be saved?
Hell no!

Does your God hold a place for us?
Hell no!

Is there time to repent?
Hell no!

Will we rise from the dead?
Hell no!

Can these sins even be forgiven?
Hell no!

Is there still hope for us?
Hell no!

Were we ever even alive?
Hell no!

Is any of this even real?
Hell no!
Hell no!

Revelation 6:12
When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold,
there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth,
the full moon became like blood,

13: and the stars of the sky fell to the earth as the fig tree sheds its winter fruit when shaken by a gale;

14: the sky vanished like a scroll that is rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.

15: Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and every free man hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains.

16: They called to the mountains and the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!

17: For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?"

1st batrep from local RTT * pure jump infantry DoA

I had the opportunity to play in a local RTT this past Saturday. Here is the list I ran:

> Commander Dante
> The Sanguinor

> Sanguinary Priest: jump pack, power sword (attached to Dante & Sanguinary Guard)
> Sanguinary Priest: jump pack, power sword & infernus pistol (attached to assault squad)
> Chaplain: jump pack & infernus pistol (attached to assault squad)

> Sanguinary Guard: 2x infernus pistol, power fist & Chapter Banner
> 10x assault Marine: flamer/meltagun; sergeant: thunderhammer & stormshield
> 10x assault Marine: flamer/meltagun; sergeant: thunderhammer & stormshield

Fast Attack
> 6x Vanguard veterans (jump packs): 2x (lightning claw & stormshield), pair of lightning claws, thunderhammer & stormshield, power sword & bolt pistol; sergeant: power fist & stormshield

1st Battle
The first mission was versus a semi mechanized eldar army. Here is the list to the best of my memory:

10x Striking Scorpions
10x Wraithguard & Spiritseer
6x Guardian jetbikes w. 2x Shuriken cannons
10x Storm Guardians - Wave Serpent

The mission was as follows:

* Deployment - Spearhead
* Nightfight all game (w00t!!!)
* Five objectives - one in the center of the table and one in the center of each table quarter; scatter each objective 2d6 after deployment; any unit within 6" of an objective could be automatically spotted.

I won the roll and opted to go second holding my entire army in reserve. ;) One assault squad succumbed to the Red Thirst and the other assault squad their sergeant received the Sanguinor's Blessing. I attached the second Priest and the Chaplain to the assault squad with the super sergeant. My opponent deployed his entire army except for the Phoenix Lord attached to the Scorpions who would outflank. Note that my opponent had not played for a long time and was having some difficulties confusing 4ed with 5ed. >.< He setup most of his army close to the middle of the table while deploying the two Falcons and Storm Guardians back along his table edge. His first two turns he moved the jet bikes, Wraithguard and Avatar towards my table edge. The Wraithlord he split off from the main group to support the two Falcons. The beginning of the second turn the Phoenix Lord and his Aspect Warriors came in on the far table edge (wrong side).

On the bottom of the second turn I rolled for reserves and in came Dante with a Priest and the Sanguinary Guard, the Sanguinor, Vanguard veterans and the assault squad with Red Thirst. Dante and his posse dropped behind a building along with the Sanguinor ready to pop out and assault the main force of the eldar. The Sanguinor chose the Avatar as his vengeful target. My Vanguard vets came in an drifted back 6" which just brought them outside of assault range so I ran them back hoping to keep them outside the range of those nasty Wraithcannons. I took a risk with the assault squad landing them behind the Wave Serpent carrying the Storm Guardians - I rolled a hit and they destroyed the serpent with a shot from the single meltagun into the rear end. The Guardians spilled out, took some wounds and failed their morale check. Definitely a good second turn. :)

Top of the third the jetbikes moved up to shoot Dante and his posse (heh). The Wraithguard moved up to target the VV. :( His other units were too far off to spot anything and the Avatar was well outside of assault range. The jetbikes fired and did enough wounds to just kill the Priest. :( The Vv's stormshields were able to absorb the shots from the Wraithguard. :) The Wraithguard then charged the VV and suffered several losses due to the power fist and thunderhammer.

Bottom of the third turn in came the assault squad with super sarge and friends. Dante and his posse moved up to assault the jetbikes while the Sanguinor moved up to assault the Avatar. The first assault squad moved into position to assault the Storm Guardians while the second assault squad dropped in behind a Falcon and blew it sky high with their meltas. Dante and his Sanguinary Guard shredded the jetbikes, the Sanguinor dropped two wounds on the Avatar while taking no wounds and the first assault squad shredded the Storm Guardians. The VV also dropped a few more Wraithguard and lost one vet. Definitely another very good turn for the Blood Saints again. :)

Over the course of the remaining game the Sanguinor dropped the Avatar, Dante and the Sanguinary Guard joined the fight with the VV versus the Wraithguard and the assault squad with super sarge and friends pulverized the Wraithlord. The Phoenix Lord and his Scorpions were the only eldar survivors coming in on the wrong side and too far away from the action. I ended the first round with a massacre.

Next up - Space Wolves...

All jump infantry DoA army field trial results

Had a chance to finally field an all jump army today at a local tourney - 14 players. Full house - overall good group of guys. Here was my 2k list:

Commander Dante
5x Sanguinary Guard: 2x infernus pistol, power fist & chapter banner

The Sanguinor

Sanguinary Priest: jump pack, power sword & infernus pistol
Sanguinary Priest: jump pack & power sword

Chaplain: jump pack & infernus pistol

10x assault Marine: flamer & meltagun; sergeant: thunderhammer & Stormshield
10x assault Marine: flamer & meltagun; sergeant: thunderhammer & Stormshield

6x Vanguard vsteran: 2x (lightning claw & stormshield), pair of lightning claws, thunderhammer & bolt pistol, power sword & bolt pistol; sergeant: power fist & stormshield

Another small and highly mobile army. Basically went 1-1-1. Not bad in my opinion considering this was a learning experience for me. First game was versus eldar (semi mech) for a massacre. Next game was versus an interesting SW army - lots of bloody assaults. My opponent had bikes and some TWC with two Iron Priests on thunder wolf mounts with cyber wolves. There was a high multi story building I could have landed all my jump troops to avoid the TWC and bikes but I decided to make it a game and dove right in. Final game was versus mech IG.

More to come soon.

My latest tactical article over on Bell of the Lost Souls

Hello everyone!

I have recently been writing a series of tactical articles over on the Bell of Lost Souls blog about DoA armies for Blood Angels. It's been lots of fun and for the most part I've received some good feedback. It's always fun to dive in and discuss the articles over on BoLS. A big thanks to BigRed and Goatboy for all their fantastic support - they are a great group of guys for sure. Thanks again BigRed !!

So here is a link to the latest article about the insertion of a Stormraven into DoA armies:

Using a Stormraven in a Blood Angels DoA army...

About the Stormraven (from Bolter and Chainsword)

I am an avid follower of the B&C BA forum. I ran across this just yesterday...

+++ Bolter and Chainsword Blood Angels Discussion of the Stormraven +++

Basically there are some who still say the Stormraven sucks shnards... well the good news is they are in the minority.

:  )

The only real nemesis of the Stormraven is the railgun, which is not a big deal - who plays Tau competitively these days? Barring a lucky shot it requires a high volume of shots to bring it down. Lets look at the mathammer. The Stormraven has moved flat-out as it should and is equipped with extra armor.

S8 (Devastator firing a rocket)
4/6 (to hit) X 3/6 (to glance) X 1/2 (4+++ cover save) = 16.667% chance to glance

If the glancing shot gets through you will still need to roll a 6 on the AP table to bring it down. That is an odds of 2.778% - good luck with that! All the other results are pretty meaningless if you have a squad full of assault terminators and a Death Company dreadnaught ready to charge the next turn.

4/6 (to hit) X 2/6 (to glance) X 1/2 (4+++ cover save) = 11.111% chance to penetrate

You still only have 50% odds of bringing it down on the AP table (unless you've got a melta)... so the overall odds drop to 5.556%. Good luck with that.

What the people who are slagging the Stormraven fail to tell you is that a DoA army has lots and lots of angry assault Marines swarming the enemy lines... it's not like every gun will be pointed at the Stormraven. Oh and what about the ubiquitous lascannon ?? The good news is that the same people saying the Stormraven sucks are the same people who told you to take rocket launchers to save some points !!! Oh the irony...

Yep if the shoe fits...

Designing a Jump Troop Only DoA Army

Building a Descent of Angels Army

I most often use one Stormraven in my DoA armies so I thought it would be useful to post an article here that does not rely upon the new skimmer. That said the official model has been released and well received in general so no more excuses.

McFiston & Friends (1850 points) * Blood Strike Revised

Here is a test list I've developed for the Adepticon championsip.

5x Death Company (jump packs): 2x power sword & power fist/bolter
Death Company dreadnaught: Blood Fists & heavy flamer

Stormraven - extra armor, twin linked assault cannon, twin linked heavy bolter & Hurricane sponsons

5x assault terminators: 3x thunderhammer & stormshield, 2x dual lightning claws
Furioso: extra armor, Blood Talons & heavy flamer

Stormraven - extra armor, twin linked lascannon & twin linked multi-melta

That's it. Very hard hitting. I've tested so far versus Wolfstar & some very nasty Tyranid lists - I have been able to table so far. I'm really liking the addition of the Lord of Death, he is just plain bad news.

2012 was predicted as a year of maasive world wide destruction by many civilizations. Maybe it will come a year early. I will be bringing my Blood Angels to Genghis Con, Adepticon and BoLScon this year.

Just saying...
