+ Legion +

Legion Astartes [Loyalist, VII: Imperial Fists]

++ Selection Rules ++

Adamantium Will

Assault Vehicle

Burning Retros:
Legion Dreadnought Drop Pods have the Shrouded special rule on the game turn that they arrive (also applying to interceptor fire or similar effects). Upon landing, the doors open automatically, but the Dreadnought does not have to deploy. In this case, the Dreadnought benefits from the effects of Shrouded, as do any units whose line of sight passes through or over the Drop Pod on the game turn of its arrival.

Consul

Crawling Fire:
After the blast marker is placed for a weapon with this rule, the firer may move the marker up to 2" in any direction so long as this would cover more models than previously.

Crushing Charge:
When charging, the model inflicts 2 Hammer of Wrath attacks and gains +1 Initiative in the Assault phase of any turn in which it has charged.

Death's Champion:
Sigismund and any unit he joins gain +1 initiative when they charge and may re-roll both charge distance and sweeping advance rolls. Additionally allows Templar Brethren to be taken as troops.

Deep Strike

Deflagrate:
After normal attacks by this weapon have been resolved, count the number of unsaved wounds caused on the target unit. Immediately resolve a number of additional automatic hits on the same unit using the weapon's profile equal to the number of unsaved wounds - these can then be saved normally. Models must still be in range in order for the additional hits to take effect. These additional hits do not themselves cause more hits.

Dolorous Fighter:
Must always issue/accept challenges when able - takes precedence over the usual rules for the Legion. When fighting in a challenge Sigismund's attacks have the Instant Death special rule and successful invulnerable saves against his attacks must be re-rolled.

Dreadnought Talon:
When first deployed on the battlefield (either at the start of the game or when arriving via Reserves later on), the Dreadnoughts must be placed within 6" of each other, but afterwards operate independently and are not treated as a vehicle squadron.

Drop Pod Assault

Eternal Warrior

Extremely Bulky

Fearless

Fleet

Furious Charge

Graviton Collapse:
Instead of rolling To Wound normally with this weapon, any model caught in its blast must instead roll equal to or under their Strength on 2D6 or suffer a wound. Against targets with an Armour value, roll 3D6 for armour penetration instead. After the graviton pulse weapon has been fired, leave the Blast marker in place. This area now counts as both difficult terrain and dangerous terrain for the next turn thanks to the gravity flux.

Immobile
Implacable Advance:
Unit is always counted as a scoring unit where Troops are also counted as scoring units.
Independent Character

Inertial Guidance System

Legiones Astartes:
Units with this special rules may always attempt to regroup regardless of casualties.

Lingering Death:
When a blast weapon is used with this rule, leave the blast marker in play for the rest of the game. This area is now treated as dangerous terrain for all models with a Toughness value and open-topped vehicles.

Machine Spirit:
Confers the Power of the Machine Spirit special rule.

Malfunction:
When rolling to hit, if three or more results of "1" are rolled, a malfunction has occured and the weapon may not be used for the rest of the game.

Master of the Legion

Move Through Cover

Reinforced Atomantic Shielding:
A Leviathan Dreadnought has a 4+ invulnerable save. In addition, if the Leviathan suffers a Vehicle Explodes damage result, add +D3 Str and +D3" to the radius of the blast.

Repair:
In the Shooting phase instead of firing a weapon, the Rhino may attempt to repair an Immobilised result on a D6 roll of a 6.

Sacred Trust:
In missions where victory points are scored for destroying units, if a Primus Medicae is within 6" of a friendly Space Marine infantry or jump infantry unit which is wiped out by the enemy, roll a D6. On a 5+ the player whose unit was destroyed also gains a Victory Point, as well as the enemy.

Severing Cut:
Each time a non-vehicle model suffers an unsaved wound from this weapon, roll a D6. On a 4+, the model suffers an extra D3 wounds which must be saved separately using the weapon’s profile (note that these wounds do not themselves generate more additional wounds).

Sniper (Sniper)

Sunder:
Attacks with this rule may re-roll failed Armour Penetration rolls.

Support Officer:
May not be used as a compulsory HQ choice for the army unless specifically exempted by a particular Legiones Astartes rule or Rite of War. (HH6: Retribution p234)

Torsion Crusher:
When a target with an Armour value is struck by this weapon, the amount of Hull Point damage caused by the weapon is doubled.

40k Reboot

When the third edition rule book was released it had a new army list for every race. This is what the game needs now - a total reboot. Space Marines, Eldar and Tau are too strong. I don't want to see AoS for 40k which is an anti competitive system. The rules need to be parsed though for sure. This could be a totally win-win situation. Players are happy again, veterans come back and GW can profit.

Third edition was a reboot and was very popular streamlining the cumbersome 2nd edition rule set which was so detailed there was even a supplement just for weapons. Think about it.

Look Up Tables & Wargaming

I started playing 40k during the beginning of 3rd edition (which may be 8th edition). I'm an engineer by trade which is kind of a combination of tech marine and mekk boy. A tech marine is trained by 1000 litanies and learns each one inside out while a mekk boy has a natural inclination towards technology that's purely intuitive. Neither really understands exactly what they are doing but both tend to produce positive results. At the time I knew how to program in a computer language know as FORTRAN that was a penultimate number cruncher. Due to the simplicity of the game at the time I was able to develop a simulation program for 40k that covered all the armies at that time and all of the rule book missions... So it was possible to simulate most any game and create a database for the results. I would run each game over 1000 times to develop an average and the results were in line with actual expected results.

The end result was a set of look up tables I was able to memorize to enhance decision making during actual game which proved to be quite helpful at winning. As an aide I could test various builds for each army and see how they performed versus each other against the various opposition as well as each other. One interesting example is the results showed that Blood Angels performed best as a mix between jump infantry and drop pod units versus a pure rhino rush build which might be surprising. Fourth edition spelled the end of rhino rush as a viable competitive army but jump infantry and drop units were largely unaffected. Out of well over 1000 games including many tournaments I only lost a total of five games, each loss which I remember and also won all the rematches.

I lost interest in programming during fifth edition for various reasons plus FORTRAN lost support as an active language (think Latin which is a dead language... No one speaks it anymore). Sixth edition was a huge shift away from fifth edition and basically all armies had significant changes so my program became obsolete and is no longer useful as a tool to track army performance. However I did discover it is still possible to maintain the look up tables via a combination of intrinsically derived data and empirical information for main armies such as Orks and Space Marines which is a great tool for decision making assuming you can memorize them. While I don't play 40k as much as I used to I am still very much a student of the game and spend many hours studying battle reports and internally analyzing the game in my mind.

If you truly love something stay true and don't let anyone deter you.

Now for an interesting observation based upon the old code... What I found to be truly fascinating is the unexpected always does well assuming it's tightly crafted and well conceived which I think still holds true today even with the speed of the Internet and a stagnant meta dominated by spammed army lists with little room for any variance at the top tier. Consider Eldar, Space Marines and Tau - with the exception of the nerf to the once ubiquitous wave serpent these three armies lost nothing and gained so much more. Sure it's very tough playing against them with all their many inherent advantages but believe it or not it's still possible which I consider to be a salvation for the game.

make me bad

I am watching the rise and fall of my salvation
There's so much shit around me, such a lack of compassion
I thought it would be fun and games, instead it's all the same
I want something to do, need to feel the sickness in you

I feel the reason as it's leaving me, no not again
It's quite deceiving as I'm feeling, the flesh make me bad

All I do is look for you, And when I fix you needed to
Just to get some sort of attention, attention
What does it mean to you? (What does it mean to you?) For me, it's something I just do (i just do)
I want something, I need to feel the sickness in you

I feel the reason as it's leaving me, no not again
It's quite deceiving as I'm feeling, the flesh make me bad

I feel the reason as it's leaving me no, not again
It's quite deceiving as I'm feeling, the flesh make me bad

I feel the reason as it's leaving me, no not again
It's quite deceiving as I'm feeling, the flesh make me bad

I feel the reason as it's leaving me, no not again
It's quite deceiving as I'm feeling, the flesh make me bad

Does it make me bad?
Does it make me bad?
Does it make me bad?
Does it make me bad?

Can 40k be Balanced ?

Introduction
You probably already know the answer which is no. Only GW can truly the balance the game. If you've been playing for several editions you probably realize the game has never been externally balanced - there has always been a top tier. So looking back we can see GW doesn't intend for external balance between armies. Currently the top three armies in my opinion are Eldar, Space Marines and Tau... Tau being in the third position. Each of these races lost nothing with the exception of the nerf to the wave serpent and actually gained a lot with the release of their 7th edition codices and new supplements.

Note that external balance in a perfect world would mean every army is equal which is much the case for 30k... This is not only true because most of the armies in the Horus Heresy are Space Marine legions but also due to the time and effort put into creating these rules. For example Alan Bligh whom is the chief developer for 30k has an extremely detailed time line for the heresy era which is used as a reference and tool to create these rules. GW on the other hand often changes the background of 40k to support changes they make to their armies and rules for whatever reason. Never was this more evident than when Mat Ward was involved in development starting back in fifth edition. 30k also has a lot of internal balance which means each army has many good units to choose from and we don't tend to see lots of spammed internet lists such is so often the case for 40k. What 40k needs is a major rehaul now.

How to Achieve True Balance
I think most players really want external balance now more than ever before and only GW can really make it happen. The good news as you've probably heard is soon an official updated set of errata and FAQs will be released that will cover not only the rules but codices and supplements as well. Personally I like what I have seen so far even though they are only rough drafts that have been released. GW asked players which rules they have questions about and these are the main ones being addressed - I think that's great too... Just think about it, this is exactly what we all wanted.

Outside of GW TOs can and do create their own FAQs which is certainly a lofty goal requiring their own time and effort. Based upon what I've seen though the end result always shows some bias and if you think about it the three armies I mentioned in the opening paragraph are still the top dogs so the meta really hasn't changed much at all. I understand it's a tough job and we all have own bias whether we realize it or not. I'm not saying Lets stick it to the man! by any means and I truly appreciate all the effort. That's why I'm very excited about GW finally taking the proverbial bull by the horns and making a real effort to properly address their own rules. I hope that TOs across the country will embrace the new errata and FAQs - let's give it a real chance rather than quick reactions that may not be well thought out upon any new release. A lot of use want to be able to play the game as intended rather than resorting to some facsimile of the rules.

So there's going to be some change that will impact the current meta... We want to know how this will affect us. From what I've seen so far GW is addressing some abuse of the current rules and providing guidelines how they are intended to actually be played. There is also some changes to how existing rules work - one good example is possibly battle brothers will no longer be able to share transports which is actually how 30k currently works. This change would impact Imperial armies such as Admech and assassins.

Conclusion
To me the game is currently dominated by Death Stars and super shooty alpha striking armies. True balance would lessen both of these types to a strong degree. No one wants to be assaulted the first turn but then again there's never been any restrictions on shooting the first turn either. True balance would put assault and shooting on equal levels.

Can GW achieve this goal? To be honest I don't really know but I'm going to give the new errata and FAQs a fair chance... Just maybe this will be a good thing too.

Why is 30k balanced ?

Is 30k balanced because it's all Space Marines all the time ? No it's not and there are other armies besides Space Marines. The game is balanced in my opinion because the rules for the armies are balanced. No one wants to plays against armies like Tau that are completely unbalanced. Take your ball and go elsewhere.

Explicit instructions how to vote for the ITC nerf the new SM psychic powers

No I haven't used them.

My advice is not to be a sheeple. Reecius tried already to nerf battle brothers but was outvoted. We can do it again.

30k Templar Tactical Analysis - Four Corners

Time for some good old tactical analysis - this time regarding my Templars.

Here's my abbreviated army list:

Sigismund

Centurion #1 - Primae Medicae (terminator armor)

Centurion #2 - Primae Medicae (artificer armor)

Templar Brethren + Land Raider

Terminators (deep striking)

Mortar Team

Leviathan Dreadnaught + Drop Pod

It's a small army for sure !

The first Centurion is attached to the terminators which deep strike. The second Centurion is attached to the Templar Brethren along with Sigismund whom all start embarked in their land raider. So I start with four units, some combined. The goal is to setup to control four points or corners. This creates a zone controlled by the four units, one of which is quasi static (mortar team). The Leviathan is a disruption unit as well as very deadly. Long range shooting is provided by the land raider and mortar team. The terminators are also a disruption unit as well and deep strike without scatter due to the nuncio vox of the Templar Brethren - as such they can provide much needed backup or teleport into an aggressive position if needed.

Establishing board control early dictates the game and puts the pressure on the enemy. The Templar Brethren are a fast threat protected by their land raider. This type of deployment forces hard decisions on the opponent what to target with their shooting... It's hard to ignore either the Leviathan which is well protected the turn it lands or the mortar team which generates lots of wounds and can snipe enemy characters.

Dictating the pace of the game and controlling the table puts the game in your hands. Some armies can counter it better than others but still you're forcing a lot of pressure on your opponent which often leads to bad decisions.

40k Full Written Batrep - Ambush - Templars (30k) vs. Dark Eldar (40k)

After having just scourged an Imperial outpost from the traitorous Alpha Legion the Templars lead by Captain Sigismund realize they have been baited into a trap as the dawn air begins to fill with armada of xenos skimmer craft. To make matters worse an incoming urgent vox from the battle barge reports that a large wave of xenos fliers are on their way.

NOTE - The report is told from the Templar point of view so there's not as much detail in the dark eldar turns.

The Impact: New 40k FAQs from Games Workshop

NOTE - This is a non tactical article and purely my opinion. I rate this as HAIR ON FIRE... Sure am glad I'm bald... Heh .

The new draft FAQs and errata have finally hit the internet this week. First let me say this is a huge blow to the Dakka Dakka YMDC trolls who are so full it not even a blow fly can stand their stinky stink smell... so yeah those losers like Nos, Kommisar Kell and others can go jump in the big lake... hurrr hurrr hurrr !!!

This is a really big deal and from what I have read GW wants to finally curb back a lot of the abuse that has been going on since the Wardian era. Supposedly the new CEO loves to play Warhammer 40k and said something along the lines of "Enough is enough !!!"

The game is only going to get better now with the new direction. I am not here to tell you about what are the biggest changes to how the game has been played and how it is going to be played... I am here to say I approve of the new direction and because a lot of rules abuse is getting the axe. Presently the game is very broken and in my area I constantly hear lots of bitching about this ad naseum which to be completely honest gets very annoying.

House Rules for Major Tournies
Wow this really bad news for any TO whom has their FAQ that is over two pages in length. We can say we want to balance a broken system but all too often certain clarifications or outright changes to the rules reveal true bias for whatever reason. For example look at how the change to the void shield generator is a self imposed nerf... It is what it is for sure. The new errata and FAQ eliminates this need. While a house rule can be disguised as good intent usually there's a bias one way or the other. Many of the answers are not clarification but instead change fundamental rules at the core level.

Conclusion
I've said it before and I'll say it again... It's always best for everyone can play an army of their own choice rather than copying just another net list. This what we all really want and aspire too in the long run. FAQs for codices are up next and sorely needed. Overall there will be less shenanigans.
